How to find the right therapist

You’re here! You’re looking for a therapist and that’s a HUGE first step. Go you!  When looking for a therapist, try to think of it as a job interview. You’re looking for YOUR best fit. This therapeutic relationship is a two way street.

Here are some potential questions to start with:

  • Who is your typical client?

  • What issues/areas of growth are some of your clients working towards?

  • How do you take care of yourself? (Yes! You can ask this! It’s important to know that the person supporting you also has their own supports in place. Bonus points if your therapist is in therapy themselves!)

  • Are you open to feedback? Again, this relationship is a two way street. Therapists have their own personal/professional styles, but should/can also be open to your needs/preferences!

If you’ve been in therapy in the past, try to provide some context/examples for the new therapist:

  • What worked?

  • What didn’t?

  • What did you like/appreciate about your last therapist?

  • What could they have done differently/better to support you?

After your initial consult call, take some time to reflect:
How did your initial conversation feel?

  • Did you feel comfortable?

  • Safe?

  • Understood?

  • Accepted?

  • Can you imagine yourself forming a working relationship with this person?

If this felt like the nudge you need to get started with therapy, set up a complimentary consult by emailing Julianne here. If you're ready to jump in and get started, book an initial session.
